Australian passengers can claim up to €600 / £520 for delayed flights from Europe or the UK under EU261 and UK261.
Australia has no domestic flight delay compensation law, but Australian travelers are protected by EU Regulation 261/2004 and UK Regulation 261 whenever their flight departed from the EU/UK, or arrived in the EU/UK on a European/British carrier. Compensation is paid in EUR or GBP regardless of nationality.
How Australian Travelers Qualify
Flights from Europe
Any departure from an EU or UK airport, including Sydney/Melbourne returns via Singapore, Dubai or Doha.
EU/UK Carrier into Europe
Flights operated by Lufthansa, BA, Virgin Atlantic, KLM or Air France arriving into Europe also qualify.
Paid in EUR or GBP
Compensation can be transferred to any Australian bank — typically A$420–A$1,000 depending on distance.
No Australian Equivalent
The Australian Consumer Law gives general protections, but no fixed monetary compensation. EU/UK rules fill that gap on European routes.
Long Claim Window
UK claims valid for up to 6 years; EU limits vary by country (for example 3 in Germany, 5 in France and Spain).
